AirAsia X denies reports of Philippines AirAsia grounding, cites smear campaign

by JOHARDY IBRAHIM

KUALA LUMPUR June 4 — AirAsia X Berhad has strongly denied reports claiming that the operations of Philippines AirAsia are facing a grounding, describing the allegations as false and part of a broader campaign aimed at undermining competition in the Philippine aviation industry.

The airline said all flights operated by Philippines AirAsia, which uses the flight code Z2, remain fully operational and continue to operate according to schedule, subject to normal operational factors such as weather conditions and other routine disruptions.

In a statement on Thursday, AirAsia Group said recent media reports suggesting a possible suspension of the airline's operations were inaccurate and did not reflect the actual status of the business.

The group alleged that the reports formed part of a coordinated effort to weaken competition in the Philippine aviation market, warning that any move towards market concentration could ultimately disadvantage consumers through higher airfares and reduced travel options.

Firmly committed

AirAsia Group Co-founder and Advisor, Tony Fernandes, said the airline remains firmly committed to maintaining affordable air travel and preserving consumer choice in the country.

"AirAsia carries almost seven million guests in the Philippines annually and our commitment to the Philippines is absolute. We are deeply invested in the country, its people and its future," he said.

Fernandes said the airline has played a significant role in expanding access to air travel over the past decade by offering affordable fares to millions of Filipinos.

Looking ahead, he said AirAsia sees significant growth opportunities arising from ongoing airport infrastructure developments in the Philippines, particularly at Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

According to Fernandes, the upgrades are expected to improve connectivity, enhance operational efficiency and support lower operating costs, enabling the airline to further strengthen its competitive position.

He added that AirAsia intends to deploy more aircraft into its Philippine operations as part of the group's broader fleet expansion plans and ambition to become the world's first narrowbody global low-cost network carrier.

The airline said the additional capacity would support network expansion, allow for more competitive fares and deliver greater value to travellers.

Philippines AirAsia reiterated its commitment to supporting tourism, economic development and connectivity across the country, while continuing to provide safe, affordable and reliable air transport services. - DagangNews.com
